NBC Gets Backlash for Supressing Viral Video

Now it appears that NBC is getting backlash for not allowing sites like YouTube.com to share the now-famous Saturday Night LiveLazy Sunday video on it’s web site. (see our post here)

According to BoingBoing, NBC is missing the importance of the web as a viral medium by not allowing it’s content to be shared around the world.

From Xeni Jardin at BoingBoing, “NBC’s lawyers are beating YouTube with a DMCA
stick because the viral content distributor helped facilitate NBC’s
biggest viral hit, ever.”

YouTube has complied with the Cease and Desist demand from NBC, but as Xeni points out they should be sending flowers, not threats, ” Viral means the stuff has a life of its own, guys, and that’s what made it a hit. NBC, you can’t have your cupcake and eat it, too.”

Is NBC missing the point?
